きゅう【急】

1 〔突然なさま〕 ～な sudden; abrupt; 〔緊急の〕 urgent; pressing.

●急な用事で on urgent business

・急な用事ができた. Some pressing business has turned up.

・急な事態 an urgent situation

・急な話 a proposal [suggestion] on short notice; a sudden offer [proposal].

●子供の急な発熱にあわてる become flustered when one's child suddenly develops a fever

・彼の死は実に急だった. His death was very sudden indeed.

・ご出発がえらく急ですね. You're in a big hurry to leave, aren't you?

・急で申し訳ないが, これから大阪まで行ってくれないか. Sorry for springing this on you on short notice, but could you go to Osaka as soon as possible?

・話があまりに急だったので, 心の準備ができていなかった. The matter was brought up too suddenly; I wasn't psychologically prepared (for it).

2 〔傾きが大きいさま〕 ～な steep; precipitous; (角度が鋭い) sharp.

●急な坂 a steep hill [slope]

・急な傾斜 a steep gradient [incline].

●その丘は東側より西側のほうが傾斜が急である. The hill rises more steeply on the western side than on the eastern.

3 〔速度が早いさま〕 ～な 〔流れが〕 swift; rapid; 〔調子が〕 rapid.

●急な流れ a swift current; a rapid stream.

●そこは流れが急だから気をつけなさい. Be careful, the current is swift over there.

急に 1 〔直ちに〕 quickly; rapidly; promptly; immediately; in short [quick] order; 〔急いで〕 hastily; in haste; in a hurry; 〔突然に〕 suddenly; (all) of a sudden; all at once; 〔思いがけずに〕 unexpectedly; 〔予告なしに〕 at a moment's notice; at [on] short notice; without warning [previous notice].

2 〔鋭く〕 sharply.

●(道路が)急に曲がる turn [bend] sharply 《to the left》.

急になる 〔速度が〕 become fast; suddenly speed up; 〔傾斜が〕 become steep.

●〔能で〕 鼓のリズムがゆっくりになったり急になったりしながら, 主人公の心の葛藤を表す. The rhythm of the hand drum(s), alternately slow and rapid, expresses the emotional agitation of the main character.

・雪国の家の屋根は傾斜が急になっている. The roofs of houses in the snow country are steep.
